Investment Casting Tolerances

The tolerance of the investment casting depends on its dimensions. It may be affected by dying temperature, cooling rate, backup sand, wax temperature, and many more.

Every investment casting industry has a tolerance standard. However, it may depend on the companies. As some companies may specialize in bigger parts and others in small parts.

At Ucasting, we categorized investment casting tolerances into Geometric and Linear tolerances.

Linear Tolerances

There are several factors to consider when applying linear tolerances for investment casting. It includes the holes, fillet radii, length, concentricity, flatness, curved holes, and straightness. Every casting process has its own tolerances. For instance, the water wax casting has the ability to control linear tolerances within CT7 to CT8. Lost foam casting is CT8-CT-9, while silica sol casting is CT5 to CT6.

Geometric Tolerances

The following features of investment casting are often applied with geometric tolerances, such as:

Flatness

This tolerance is acquired from a consistent plane for the entire deviation. Every part of the investment cast should be settled between the flat plane. Such plane will affect the highest qualification of deviation.

Straightness

Straightness tolerance refers to the highest tolerable diameter of the parts. Sometimes, it may cause problems for some investment casting as it can be bent easily. But the experts will make sure to check if there are any bent parts.

Parallelism

If you have requirements of parallelism tolerance for your part, Ucasting will solve this issue prior to production. Maintaining prongs parallelism is not always easy due to the volumetric loss of structure. It should be adjusted carefully to achieve a precise part.

Roundness

There are many ways to examine the roundness tolerances – by reading the overall indicator or taking half the difference between the least and greatest condition of the circular part.

Ucasting employs an inspection process to control the part’s roundness.

Concentricity

Concentricity tolerance is checked by the cylindrical surfaces. It is also recognized by the different dimensions of one central place. The bore center and parts’ outside diameter are concentric about .003inches per ½ inch wall thickness.

Hole Tolerance

It refers to the standard cast hole roundness. Hole tolerance gives benefit for inner shrinkage and up to ½ inch diameter. The required hole clearance will be +/- .003” for accurate fit and shape.

Internal Radii, Curved Holes, and Fillets

Curved holes are created using soluble wax. To catch the deflection into account, the tolerance of the hole should be doubled and all dimensions are expanded. Ucasting can provide +/- .005.” diameter tolerance.
